Battle at Kronborg Castle, Helsingor

Dramatic View of the Swedish conquest of Kronborg (Helsingor Castle) in 1658 engraved after a drawing made at the scene of the battle by the famous Swedish engineer and master of fortifications Eric Dahlberg (or Dalbergh).

The engraving was published in Samuel Pufendorf’s Histoire du regne de Charles Gustave, roy de Suede (Nuremberg, 1697).

Surrounded in a decorative picture-frame style border with two cartouches telling the story of the battle. In the dramatic scene, cannon bursts explode in mid air, and there are fascinating details of the troops in the foreground.

The Swedish solider and engineer Count Erik Dahlberg, (1625-1703) became an engineer adviser to Charles X of Sweden and director general of fortifications. (he is sometimes called the Vauban of Sweden)

Dahlberg’s drawings were the basis for several pubications including “Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna”, or Ancient and Modern Sweden, published 1660-1716 and Samuel Pufendorf’s “Histoire de Charles X Gustave. ”
